Schmiedefeld am Rennsteig (Germany), Saturday 5 July 2014
The Schneekopflauf is a 12.7km multi-terrain running race that is held annually in July in the Thuringian Forest (German: Thüringer Wald), a densely wooded mountain range in Central Germany.
Starting at an elevation of 711m in Schmiedefeld am Rennsteig (pictured), a winter sports and hiking resort on the ridge of the Thüringer Wald, the race follows a point-to-point course that includes about 450m of ascent and 200m of descent.
Competitors run on the Rennsteig hiking trail across the Großer Finsterberg (952m) to the finish on the summit of the Schneekopf (978m), the second-highest peak of the Thuringian Forest.
Last year's Schneekopflauf had 238 finishers, led home by John Mooney (48:23) and Nicole Kruhme (56:43).
