The Schneekopflauf is a multi-terrain running event held annually in July in the Thüringer Wald (Thuringian Forest), a 70-kilometre-long and 20-kilometre-wide mountain range in Central Germany.

The event offers two very hilly point-to-point races:

  • 12.7km with about 450m of ascent
  • 22.5km with about 850m of ascent

Starting at an elevation of 711m in Schmiedefeld am Rennsteig (pictured), a winter sports and hiking resort situated on the ridge of the range, both routes take the runners along the Rennsteig hiking trail and across the Großer Finsterberg (944m) to the finish on the summit of the Schneekopf (978m), the second-highest peak of the mountain range.

The course offers many beautiful vistas of the scenery.
