"Barock und Natur" - the Dresden Marathon takes runners on a sightseeing tour through the most scenic parts of Saxony's capital city.

In 2012, over 7500 runners took part in the event which offers a full marathon, a half marathon, a 10k race and a 4.2k run.

The 42.2-kilometre marathon consists of two similar laps.

The start and finish are on the egde of the historic city centre which was completely destroyed during Word War Two but rebuilt later.

Participants run along both banks of the River Elbe, through the beautiful public park of "Großer Garten", and past innumerable impressive buildings.

Most of the route is on asphalt roads. Some short sections are on cobbles or on gravel paths. The course is certified and gently undulating.
