Wallnau auf Fehmarn (Germany), Saturday 15 June 2013

Held on the German Baltic Sea island of Fehmarn, the Fehmarn Marathon offers a 5km and a 10km race, a 21km half marathon, and a 42km marathon.

The full marathon consists of two very scenic loops. Participants run on the grassy dikes that follow the beautiful coastline in Fehmarn's north-western corner, and on roads and trails through the pancake-flat agricultural interior of the island.

The start and the finish are at the 'Strandcamping Wallnau' on the west coast, near the 'Wallnau Waterbird Reserve', a lovely resting spot for migratory birds.

Last year, the event had 280 finishers overall. The half marathon was the most popular distance (105 finishers).

Fehmarn is connected to the German mainland by a road and rail bridge, and there are also ferry connections with Denmark.
