Vienna (Austria), Sunday 18 November 2012
Leopold III, Margrave of Austria and father of at least 18 children, would surely have been thrilled to learn that 876 years (and three days) after his death hundreds of lusty men and women would pay him their tribute by running the Leopoldilauf in Vienna.
Staged on a 7km loop course in the vast Prater park, the event offers a 7k, a 14k, and a 21.1k half marathon. The course is certified, pancake-flat, and traffic-free.
The start and finish are on Prater Hauptallee, an over 4km-long avenue through the park. The route passes Vienna's famous Giant Ferris Wheel (pictured).
Participants can use the showers and changing facilities of the LCC running club at the Ernst-Happel-Stadion, Austria's national stadium which is just around the corner.
