Wies - Ehrenhausen (Austria), Saturday 5 May 2012
In 2012, all Welschlauf races will finish in Ehrenhausen.
Over 1800 runners and nordic walkers took part in the 2011 edition of the Welschlauf, an atmospheric road running event, held annually in a wine-growing region in southern Austria, near the border with Slovenia.
The event offers three very hilly and scenic point-to-point courses: a 42.2km marathon, a 21.1km half marathon, and a 10.8K for runners and nordic walkers.
The routes alternate in direction each year. In 2012, the marathon start will be in the village of Wies. The finish will be in Ehrenhausen, which is on the train line from Graz to Maribor. Half marathon and 10.8K runners will join the field en route.
Overall, the routes are downhill but they include plenty of climbs.
The Welschlauf is an event without a prize fund or elite athletes but lots fun runners, music, food and locally produced Welsch wine.
In 2011, the marathon winners were Vinzenz Kumpusch (2:49:59) and Ulrike Striednig (3:39:00).
