Potsdam (Germany), Sunday 3 June 2012
Over 3300 runners and walkers took part in last year's Schlösserlauf in the city of Potsdam, which is located on the edge of Germany's capital Berlin.
The event offers a half marathon and a 10km race.
The start and finish are on the athletics track of the "Sportpark Luftschiffhafen", situated on the Templiner See — one of the many lakes in and around Potsdam.
The Schlösserlauf is not only a scenic run through Potsdam's city centre, through its landscaped parks and gardens, and alongside lakes, it's also an immensely interesting race through history.
Participants pass, for instance, the triumphal arch of Brandenburg Gate (not to be confused with the famous one in Berlin!), they run across the Glienicke Bridge (which connects the former West-Berlin with the former East Germany, and where the U.S. and the Soviet Union exchanged a number of spies), they run past Schloss Cecilienhof (where Churchill, Truman and Stalin met after World War Two for the Potsdam Conference), through the small Russian enclave of Alexandrowka with its lovely wooden houses, and finally through Park Sanssouci with its magnificent palaces, the summer retreat of Frederick the Great, King of Prussia.
Last year, Hagen Brosius won the half marathon in a time of 1:10:52. Karsta Parsiegla was the first woman across the line (1:28:35). There's no need to hurry, however. Runners get plenty of time to take a closer look at all the beautiful sights along the route — the time limit to complete the course is 3 hours 30 minutes.
