This is the Grossglockner High Alpine Road in summer.

With about 900 finishers every year, the Grossglockner Berglauf is Austria's most popular mountain running race.

The route is 12.7 kilometres long. Overall, it includes around 1500 metres of climbing.

The start is in the village of Heiligenblut (1256m) which sits at the foot of the majestic Grossglockner (3798m), Austria's highest peak.

Participants run on varied terrain through forests and pastures and around two glacial lakes. The final kilometre is particularly steep (about 300 metres of ascent)!

The finishing line is at the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe (2370m), a vantage point which offers phenomenal views of the Grossglockner and the Pasterze Glacier below.

After the race, shuttle buses take the runners back to Heiligenblut.

In 2011, the winners were Geoffrey Gikuni of Kenya (1:10:16) and Antonella Confortola of Italy (1:26:31).
