Wismar (Germany), Sunday 19 August 2012

Over 500 runners took part in last year's Schwedenlauf in Wismar, a medieval Hanseatic port on Germany's Baltic coast.

The event forms part of the annual four-day "Schwedenfest" street festival which remembers the time when Wismar was under Swedish rule (from 1648 to 1803).

Entrants can choose between the 10k race and the 2k fun run.

The start and the finish are on Marktplatz, Wismar's spacious main square.

Participants in the 10k race run a short loop through the old town (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), followed by a much longer loop around the city. The route passes many of Wismar's main sights as well as the shipyards and the old harbour.

Last year, around 300 runners took part in the 10k race and about 200 in the 2k fun run. The 10k winners were Mathias Ahrenberg (34:01) and Carmen Siewert (36:24).
