This mountain running event in north-eastern Italy is held in memory of Erwin Maier (1971-2000), a devoted mountaineer from the small town of Paluzza, which is located at the foot of the Carnic Alps, very close to the border with Austria.

Participants run 11.5 kilometres, mostly on dirt roads. Approximately 1.5 kilometres are on paved roads. The route features about 930 metres of elevation gain.

The start is in the village of Casteons di Paluzza on the northern edge of Paluzza. The finish is at 1521 metres above sea level at the Rifugio Casera on Malga Pramosio, a lovely mountain pasture framed by majestic mountains.

At the Rifugio Casera, runners can sample local specialities or book accommodation.

The course will be closed to traffic. The time limit to complete the course is 3 hours 20 minutes.

In 2010, the winners were Kipsang Zakayo Biwott of Kenya (52:11) and Marta Santamaria (1:04:38).

The event gives runners the opportunity to study the course of the World Masters Mountain Running Championships (WMMRC), which will be held in Paluzza two weeks later.
