20. Határfutás / 20. Polumaraton Barcs-Virovitica
Barcs (Hungary) - Virovitica (Croatia), Saturday 17 September 2011
Croatia is on this bank of the River Drava, Hungary on the other side.
The Határfutás ("Border Race") connects the twin towns of Barcs in Hungary and Virovitica in Croatia. The main race is 21.35 kilometres long, which is slightly more than a half marathon distance. The route is mostly flat and fast but it's not closed to traffic.
In 2011, participants will run from Barcs to Virovitica (the route alternates in direction each year). The start will be at the thermal spa in Barcs, a small town of 12,000 people, situated on the River Drava. The finish line will be in the town centre of Virovitica (22,000 inhabitants).
Although most of the race takes place on Croatian soil most participants in the event are Hungarians. In 2010, just 8 out of 124 finishers were Croats. Barnabás Bene (1:05:58) and Simona Staicu (1:19:53), both from Hungary, set new course records.
