Over 500 runners of all ages took part in last year's edition of the Donaukanallauf in Vienna. The event offers a 9.5km race (two laps), a 4.75km run (one lap), and children's competitions.

Participants run on cycleways along both banks of the Donaukanal ("Danube Canal") which flows through Vienna's city centre. In the Middle Ages this was the main branch of the River Danube.

The start and finish are at the "Strandbar Herrmann", a trendy beach bar located on the edge of the inner city, next to the Urania, an Art-Nouveau building that houses the observatory.

In 2010, the top finishers were Tomasz Sommer (31:37) and Irina Guarghias (38:09).
