Cave del Predil (Italy), Sunday 17 July 2011
The Giro del Lago is a relatively small 9km multi-terrain running race around the magnificent Lago del Predil, which is well-hidden in the north-eastern corner of Italy, near the ski resort of Tarvisio and the borders with Slovenia and Austria.
The 1.5km-long lake sits at an elevation of 959m amidst the stunning mountain scenery of the Julian Alps.
The start and finish are in the former mining village of Cave del Predil (or "Raibl" in German language). The lead and zinc mine closed 20 years ago, and most of the inhabitants have long left.
The route is very hilly and scenic, with a mix of gravel roads (3km), mountain trails (3.5km) and asphalt roads (2.5km).
Participants can take their time to enjoy the stunning scenery. The time limit to complete the course is a generous three hours.
The course record is held by local athlete Alessandro Piccoli (31:54).
