Over 2200 runners completed last year's summer evening run around the Reschensee, an artificial lake at 1500 metres above sea level, surrounded by snow-capped mountains.

The lake sits in the far north of Italy, on the borders with Austria and Switzerland. Most people in the region speak German as a first language.

The route of the Reschenseelauf is 15.3 kilometres long, undulating, mostly on asphalt, and very scenic. It runs all the way along the lakefront!

The start and finish is in Graun (Italian: Curon), near the 14th-century church tower that rises spookily out of the lake. The church and 163 homes were submerged when the lake was created in 1950.

In order to avoid overcrowding of the course, which is quite narrow in parts, runners will be started in four groups, in intervals of six minutes.

In 2010, the winners were Peter Lanziner (49:35) and Maja Gautschi (59:24).
