Brixen-Bressanone

The Brixen Dolomites Marathon is a highly challenging uphill mountain race in Italy's alpine province of Bolzano - Alto Adige (or "South Tyrol") where German is the prevalent language.

The 42.2-kilometre route features 2340 metres of elevation gain. As this is very tough, the event also offers a relay race for teams of four runners.

The start is in the picturesque old town of Brixen (Italian: Bressanone), situated at 560 metres above sea level in the narrow Eisack Valley.

The finish is at an elevation of 2450 metres on Plose, a massive mountain with three summits over 2500 metres, and a popular skiing and hiking area.

Most of the route is on forest and mountain trails. Some sections are on asphalt roads.

After the race, a cable car takes runners to the award ceremony in the village of St. Andrä (at 1000 metres). From there, buses bring participants home to Brixen.

In 2010, the winners were Hermann Achmüller (3:37:04) and Irene Senfter (4:47:11).
