Madonna di Senale (Italy), Sunday 28 August 2011
This 44.5-kilometre trail running race in Italy's alpine region of Trentino-Alto Adige features an immensely-beautiful but highly-challenging point-to-point course.
The route includes 2,905 metres of ascent and 3,256 metres of descent!
Competitors run along the southern slopes of the Maddalene mountain chain which lies to the west of the city of Bolzano. Most of the route is at an elevation of over 1,800 metres. The highest point on the course is at 2,420 metres.
Along the route there are four aid stations. Nevertheless, participants must carry some equipment with them if they don't want to risk a time penalty — a rucksack or a bag containing some fluids, a windstopper, gloves, and a hat.
Last year, the course was approximately three kilometres shorter. The fastest finishers were Fulvio Dapit (4:37:08) and Stephanie Jimenez (5:20:12). The time limit to complete the course stands at nine hours.
