26th Pécs-Harkány Road Race 2010
The 25km road race from Pécs to Harkány in southern Hungary is a classic in the Hungarian race calendar. More than 600 runners took part in last year's 25th edition of the event. Over 200 of them participated in the relay race for teams of three runners.
The start is on the southern edge of Pécs, an old city with lots of historic sights. Pécs has been designated as European Capital of Culture 2010 (alongside with Istanbul and Essen).
The undulating course runs southwards to the small town of Harkány, which is just a few kilometres from the border with Croatia. Harkány is renowned for its large thermal baths. All participants get free entry to the spa to relax in the steaming hot pools after the race.
In 2009, Ashenafi Erkolo, an Ethiopian athlete who is based in Hungary, celebrated victory in a time of 1:17:50. Judit Nagy, two-times Olympian and winner of the Paris Marathon 1995, broke the tape as the first woman in 1:33:07.
