Held since 1977 in the mountainous Prešov Region in Slovakia, the Malý štrbský maratón is a long-standing running event that offers two hilly road races (10km and 31km) as well as several shorter races for children.
The start/finish line is in the village of Štrba which sits in a wide green valley between two mountain ranges, the High Tatras to the north (pictured) and the Low Tatras to the south.
Both the 10km and the 31km routes run through beautiful woods and grassland into the foothills of the Low Tatras, providing fantastic views of the High Tatras.
The routes split at the 3km mark in the village of Šuňava. The 10km runners turn left to run along a different road back to Štrba whereas the participants in the 31km race turn right for an out-and-back trip to Liptovská Teplička.
The difference between the lowest and the highest point on the 31km course is about 100 metres.
The course is not closed to traffic during the race.
