Völkerschlachtdenkmal, Leipzig, Germany (Copyright © 2012 Hendrik Böttger)

This Halbmarathon (half marathon) in Germany's state of Sachsen (Saxony) begins and ends at the 91-metre-high Völkerschlachtdenkmal (Monument to the Battle of the Nations), one of Europe's biggest monuments, located about four kilometres south-east of the city centre of Leipzig.

The route loops through the southern outskirts of Leipzig and through outlying villages and rural areas where a coalition of Russian, Prussian, Austrian and Swedish armies defeated Napoleon in a fierce battle in October 1813.

The course is a bit undulating in parts (80 metres of ascent over the 21.1 kilometres), and some sections are off road.

Participants have the choice to run the race as an individual or as a relay (2x10.55km).
