Held annually in the autumn in Köln (Cologne), Germany's fourth-largest city with a population of more than one million, the Köln Marathon is well known for its cheerful atmosphere and its excellent crowd support.

These races are available:

  • 0.5km-1km-2km Kinderlauf (kids' run; on Saturday)
  • 21.1km Halbmarathon (half marathon)
  • 42.2km Marathon
  • 42.2km Staffelmarathon (4-person relay)
  • 42.2km Schulmarathon (6-person relay for school children)

Starting in Deutz on the right bank of the Rhein (Rhine), the marathon route takes the runners across the river to the city centre. Then, participants run three different loops through the southern, western and northern parts of Cologne.

The finish line is at the imposing Kölner Dom (Cologne Cathedral), the most-visited sight in the country.

The start area and the finish area are approximately one mile (1.6km) apart.

The course is mainly flat.
