Night owls will be particularly interested in the Mitternachtslauf (‘Midnight Run’), a 10k race which traditionally starts at 11pm on a Friday night in late July.

Held since 1989 in the small town of Heiligenhafen, a popular summer holiday destination on the Baltic Sea coast in northern Germany, the event attracts a mix of local runners and holiday makers from all over the country and beyond.

Starting on the athletics track of the Sportplatz Lütjenburger Weg, the race takes the runners through the historic town centre (pictured below), through residential areas, past the marina, along the beach promenade and around the Binnensee lagoon.

The first half of the course is very undulating whereas the second half is mainly flat.

The time limit to finish the race is 90 minutes.

In addtion to the 10k race, the event incorporates a 10k relay (4 x 2.5k), a 5.5k run around the Binnensee and a kids' run.
