The Skatstadtmarathon is an atmospheric running event that draws a crowd of more than 3,000 runners of all ages to the ‘Skatstadt’ Altenburg, the home of Skat, Germany's most popular card game.

Situated in the state of Thüringen (Thuringia), approximately 50 kilometres south of Leipzig, Altenburg is an over 1,000-year-old town with a population of about 31,000 and a pleasant historic centre overlooked by an imposing hilltop castle complex.

With a variety of race distances for participants to choose from, the event has something for everyone:

  • 400m - 1km - 3.6km kids run
  • 5.4km run or walk
  • 13.3km run or walk
  • 21.1km half marathon run or walk
  • 42.2km marathon
  • 42.2km relay for teams of two runners (2 x 21.1km)

All routes begin and end on Markt, Altenburg's pretty main square.

The full marathon is two laps of the half marathon course which is very scenic but neither flat nor fast. The race is run on all sorts of terrain (asphalt, gravel, trails, cobbles, ...) and the difference between the lowest and the highest point on the course is over 100 metres. Overall, each lap features about 500 metres of ascent.
