Skomagerhus border crossing between Denmark and Germany (Author: Moonwalker74 at German Wikipedia / public domain / photo modified by runinternational.eu)

The ‘Border Run’ (Danish: Grænseløbet; German: Grenzlauf) is a multi-terrain running event held annually since 1985 on the border between Denmark and Germany.

Two races are available, 5.15km and 11.4km long, both starting and finishing at the Grænsehallerne sports centre in Kruså, a village on the Danish side of the border.

The 5.15km run is held entirely on Danish soil whereas the 11.4km race takes the runners across a footbridge (pictured) into Germany and then, after about two kilometres, through another border crossing back into Denmark.

Both routes are on mixed terrain (asphalt, gravel and trails), mostly through woods and farmland, and rather challenging. The 11.4km race features 176 metres of ascent!
