The Banja Luka Maraton is held annually in autumn in Banja Luka, a lively and green university city of about 185,000 people.

Located halfway between Zagreb and Sarajevo, approximately 190 kilometres from each city, Banja Luka is the second-largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the largest one in the Republika Srpska.

The event has something for everyone:

  • 200m kids run
  • 1.2k fun run
  • 10k
  • 10k relay (2 x 5k)
  • half marathon
  • marathon

The routes of the 10k, half marathon and marathon races have been accurately measured and certified by World Athletics.

Starting on Trg Krajine, the main square in the city centre, and ending inside of the medieval Kastel Fortress (approximately 700 metres from the start area), the course is gently undulating.

Participants in the 10k race run one lap through the city. The half and full marathon routes also take the runners out and back along the narrow valley of the Vrbas river.

In 2024, several participants reported after the race that there were no kilometre markers along the route and no course markers so that some runners took the wrong turns and got lost. Furthermore, no results and no finishing times have been made available.
