Held annually in July at the foot of the majestic Großglockner, Austria's highest peak at 3,798 metres, the Grossglockner Berglauf is one of Europe's most popular mountain running events.
You can expect the race to sell out several months in advance.
Every year, around 1,000 runners complete the 13,367-metre multi-terrain course which is very demanding as it features 1,265 metres of ascent. The final kilometre is particularly steep.
Starting at an elevation of 1,247 metres in the village of Heiligenblut, the route takes the runners through forests and pastures and around a chain of glacial lakes.
The finish line is at Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe (2,370 metres), a vantage point which offers phenomenal views of the Grossglockner and the quickly-retreating Pasterze glacier below.
After the race, runners can use the free bus service, which travels on the day of the race along the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, to get back to Heiligenblut.
