Held annually on Silvester (New Year's Eve) in Austria's capital Wien (Vienna), the Wiener Silvesterlauf features a highly-scenic 5.35km loop course around Vienna's Old Town.
The race route takes the runners along the imperial Ringstraße which is lined with grandiose monuments and buildings.
Starting at the main building of the University of Vienna, the route passes, for instance, the Hofburg, the Austrian Parliament buildings, the Rathaus, the Staatsoper, the Burgtheater and the Kunsthistorisches Museum.
The time limit to complete the course is 90 minutes.
Every year, the New Year's Eve Run attracts around 3,000 or more participants. The event is open to runners, walkers and nordic walkers.
