Held annually since 1984, the Sie + Er Lauf ("She + He Run") in Austria's capital Vienna (German: Wien) is a road running event for mixed relay teams of one female and one male runner.
Sorry, it was a running event for mixed relay teams. In 2023, teams of two male or two female runners were allowed to take part in the race as well. As expected, a team of two male runners finished first.
So, the event's unique character is gone. That comes as no surprise. Vienna is at the forefront of the ongoing cultural revolution.
Well, each member of the team runs four kilometres. Teams can decide themselves who runs first.
The race takes place on Hauptallee, the main avenue through the Prater, Vienna's largest public park. The route is closed to all traffic and completely flat.
Starting near the Ernst-Happel-Stadion, Austria's largest stadium, each competitor runs two kilometres out and back eastwards (towards the Lusthaus, pictured) and then two kilometres out and back westwards (towards the famous Ferris wheel).
