Mensch gegen Maschine (man against machine) is the motto of the annual Schneeberg Lauf, a 10km uphill mountain race in Austria.

The race follows a multi-terrain route which includes 1,200 metres of ascent.

Starting in the health resort of Puchberg am Schneeberg, which is situated approximately 75 kilometres from Vienna, participants compete against a historic steam train that runs up the slopes of the Schneeberg (2,076m), Austria's easternmost mountain over 2,000 metres high (pictured).

The finish line is at an elevation of 1,800 metres at the summit station of the Schneebergbahn (Schneeberg Railway).

Athletes with superior stamina may opt to take part in the Schneeberg Trail, which features two race options:

  • 20km uphill course with 2,000m of ascent
  • 31km up-and-down loop course with 2,100m of ascent
