The Geolauf is held annually in the spring in Villach, a town of about 65,000 people situated in the state of Kärnten (Carinthia) in the southern part of Austria, near the borders with Italy and Slovenia.

It features three race categories:

• 7km Einzellauf for individual runners
• 7km Businesslauf for teams of three runners (each runner runs 7km)
• 7km Nordic Walking

Starting at the Fachhochschule Kärnten (Carinthia University of Applied Sciences) in the eastern part of Villach, the route follows the Drauradweg cycleway along both banks of the Drau river.

The course is mostly flat but it includes some short ascents as well.
