Held in Poland's ancient capital of Kraków (also known as Cracow), a lively and beautiful city with a population of 760,000, the Cracovia Maraton attracts an international crowd of more than 4,500 marathon runners.

The race begins and ends on Rynek Głowny, Europe's largest medieval town square — and a real showpiece of a square (pictured).

At the time of writing this article, no details on this year's marathon route had been published. You'd better check the official event website for more details.

Last year, participants ran two laps of a mostly-flat 21.1km-long course. The route took the runners through the Old Town (which has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1978), through green areas, along the River Wisła, and past the Royal Castle and Cathedral on Wavel Hill.

The top finishers were Taras Salo of Ukraine (2:17:03) and Hellen Jepkosgei Kimutai of Kenya (2:43:04).
