Held on a sunny and breezy day with temperatures of about 8°C at the start at 9am, the 22nd Marcia delle Risorgive drew a crowd of about 1,700 participants to the village of Zoppola, which is 10km east of the town of Pordenone in the north-east of Italy.

The event offers three routes — 7km, 12km and 18km long.

All three routes are on mixed terrain (asphalt, gravel, grass, and trails). We tested the 18km route. The majority of the route was off road.

Zoppola sits on the wide Venetian-Friulian plain, so the course is completely flat.

The area is very fertile as there are many karst springs (Italian: risorgive) that are fed by underground streams. Accordingly, the route runs through farmland, vineyards and a number of small villages.

A marcia is a non-competive event for the whole family, for runners and walkers of all abilities. It's not a race. There's no timekeeping, and you won't find any results lists. Prizes are awarded to the largest groups, not to the fastest finishers.

In this marcia, you can start to run (or walk) at any time between 8.30am and 10am, and you can still decide on the course which route you want to take.
