The Erzberglauf is one of Central Europe's most popular mountain running events. In 2015, approximately 1,000 runners and 200 nordic walkers took part in the race.

It is also a very unusual race as participants run up the terraced benches of an enormous open-pit mine, the Erzberg ("Ore Mountain"), which rises above the old mining town of Eisenerz in Austria's state of Steiermark (Styria).

The route is 12.5km long, starting in Eisenerz's town centre and finishing on the summit of the Erzberg (1468m). The elevation gain from start to finish is 788m.

There's a free shuttle bus service between the start and the mountain top, so that supporters can get to the finish area to watch the field winding its way up the benches.
