The Stadtlauf running series in Germany starts off in Chemnitz, the ‘Stadt der Moderne’, a fascinating city with a long industrial heritage and a population of about 240,000 people.

Situated in eastern Germany, Chemnitz was renamed Karl-Marx-Stadt by the GDR authorities in 1953, but it returned to its original name in 1990.

The event comprises a 5k, a 10k, a half marathon, and children's races.

The route is a flat 5km loop that begins at the Karl Marx Monument, an enormous 7.10m-high bronze head of Karl Marx — the second-largest bust in the world.

Competitors run through the modern city centre (built within the last 20 years), along the ‘Straße der Nationen’ (a socialist-style boulevard), and around the Schlossteich (a very pretty small lake).

Instead of a bib number, participants get a technical T-shirt which they must wear during the race.
