This zimní běh ("winter run") in the Czech Republic offers a 5k, a 10k, and a half marathon.

All races begin and end at the castle of Vlašim, an old town of about 12,000 inhabitants, situated approximately 60km south-east of Prague.

The 5k is a hilly loop through the lovely English-style castle park. The route features about 100m of ascent.

The 10k takes the runners through the castle park and then out and back a country road to the village of Dub. The route includes more than 200m of ascent.

With 680m of ascent, the half marathon is a very challenging race. Competitors run through the park and to Dub, and then to the observation tower on the summit of Velký Blaník (638m, pictured), a wooded hill that is steeped in legends.

The route is a mix of roads and trails. The roads are not closed to traffic.
