The Jever-Fun-Lauf attracts an international crowd of about 1,500 road runners to the town of Schortens which sits on the pancake-flat East Frisian peninsula in northern Germany, near the North Sea port of Wilhelmshaven.

Named after a non-alcoholic beer that is brewed in the nearby town of Jever, the event offers three road races — 5k, 10k, 10 miles. Children run 1 mile.

The route is a flat, fast, certified and spectator-friendly 4.125km-long loop course through the town. The races are run on asphalt and paved roads.

Competitors run through the town centre and through residential areas and they pass the St.-Stephanus-Kirche (pictured above) which was built in the 12th century on a 4.5m-high artificial hill to protect the church from flooding. Schortens is situated at an elevation of just four metres above sea level!

In 2014, the fastest finishers in the 10-mile race were Nicholas Togom (46min 32sec) and Rose Kosgei (53min 43sec), both of Kenya.
