With more than 32,000 finishers last year (not including the children's races), the Vienna City Marathon is one of the biggest spring running events in Europe.

In 2014, the half marathon had over 13,500 finishers, and more than 6,300 runners completed the marathon. In addition, approximately 3,100 relay teams (of four runners per team) finished the marathon relay race.

The course is rather flat and fast, with a difference of 44m between the lowest and the highest point on the course (but it's not as flat as the course of the Herbstmarathon which takes place annually in Vienna's Prater).

All races begin at the Vienna International Centre (also known as ‘UNO City’), an imposing complex of office blocks and towers on the River Danube.

The route runs through the wooded Prater with its famous Ferris wheel, along the Donaukanal (pictured), past the Schönbrunn Palace, and along the imperial Ringstrasse — to name but a few of the sights along the course.

The finish line is at the Hofburg, formerly the residence of the Habsburg Monarchy.
