Ston (Croatia), Sunday 21 September 2014
With 120 finishers last year the Ston Wall Marathon is still a small event, held in a relaxed atmosphere in an amazingly beautiful location on the Dalmatian coast in the southern part Croatia.
Three routes are on offer — a 4km fun run, a 15km race, and a 42.2km marathon.
All three races are very hilly and scenic, starting and finishing in the medieval salt-producing fortress town of Ston, which sits on the Pelješac peninsula between the cities of Split and Dubrovnik.
The first 1.5km take the runners to the fishing village of Mali Ston, from where they run back to Ston on the 14th-century "Great Wall" which connects Ston and Mali Ston across the hillsides.
The remaining 38km of the marathon are run (partly out and back, and partly on gravel roads) through pine forests, along picturesque bays, and past Ston's vast saltpans.
After the race, runners will be treated with a Mediterranean-style meal. Ston is widely known for its seafood cuisine!
