Starting at 11pm on a Friday night in late July, the Mitternachtslauf (‘Midnight Run’) attracts a crowd of around 1000 runners.
The route is a 10km loop through Heiligenhafen, a small town on the Baltic coast in Germany's northernmost state of Schleswig-Holstein.
Participants run through the historic town centre and through residential areas, past the marina, along the beach promenade, and through the ‘Ferienzentrum’ holiday resort.
In 2013, the fastest finishers were Dennis Mehlfeld (32:23) and Anke Tiedemann (38:24). The time limit to complete the course is 90 minutes.
