The Solidarity Marathon is held every year on August 15, the feast of the Assumption of Mary, an important feast day in Poland.

Last year, 739 runners completed the 42.2km race through the Tricity, a conurbation of three cities on the Baltic coast — the shipbuilding cities of Gdynia and Gdańsk, and the chic beach resort of Sopot in between.

The event commemorates the workers who were killed by Polish communist army and police during the strikes and riots of December 1970 in northern Poland.

In August 1980, after more strikes, the Solidarność ("Solidarity"), the first independent trade union in a Warsaw Pact country, was born at the Gdańsk shipyard.

The new marathon course is gently undulating and IAAF-certified, starting at the ‘Monument to the victims of December 1970’ in Gdynia and finishing on Długi Targ, a beautiful square in the historic centre of Gdańsk.

The time limit to finish the race is 5hr 30min.
