Ston (Croatia), Sunday 8 September 2013
The Ston Wall Marathon is a small but unique fun race, held in an amazingly beautiful location on the Dalmatian coast in southern Croatia.
Entrants can choose between three very hilly and challenging routes — the 42k marathon, the 15k run, and the 4k walk. Parts of the course are on dirt roads.
The start and finish are in the medieval salt-producing fortress town of Ston, situated on the Pelješac peninsula between the cities of Split and Dubrovnik.
At first, participants will run 1.5 kilometres to the fishing village of Mali Ston. From there, they will run back to Ston on the impressive 14th-century "Great Wall", which connects Ston and Mali Ston across the hillsides.
Then, competitors will run 38 kilometres (partly out and back) through pine forests, along picturesque bays, and past Ston's vast saltpans.
After the race, runners will be treated with a Mediterranean-style meal. Ston is widely known for its seafood cuisine!
