The Lübeck Marathon is held on an undulating out-and-back course between the Hanseatic City of Lübeck and the Baltic seaport of Lübeck-Travemünde (pictured).
Last year, over 2700 runners took part in the event which comprises a full and a half marathon, a 10km race, a 4.2km run, a 2.1km children's race, and a marathon relay for teams of ten runners.
Starting and finishing on the main square of Lübeck's medieval Old Town, the marathon route takes runners through outlying districts and green areas to the turning point on the newly-renovated beach promenade of Travemünde.
Participants in the marathon and in the half marathon run (in both directions) through an 866-metre-long road tunnel under the River Trave.
In 2012, the marathon winners were Jens Hollmann (2:34:11) and Marion Halbreiter (3:15:03). The time limit to complete the race is six hours.
