Goethe and Schiller in Weimar

Held in the "Stadt der deutschen Klassik" Weimar, a city of 65,000 people in the state of Thuringia in central Germany, the Stadtlauf attracts around 3000 runners.

The event comprises a 10km run (two laps), a half marathon (four laps), and a number of shorter children's races.

The route is an undulating loop on asphalt and cobbles through Weimar's very pretty historic centre, and on gravel paths through the English-style ‘Park an der Ilm’.

Thousands of spectators line the course every year as the Stadtlauf forms part of the annual Zwiebelmarkt (Onion Market) which has been held for 360 years and which draws approximately 300,000 visitors over three days.

Weimar's cultural heritage is immense. Many literary and artistic geniuses like Goethe, Schiller, Cranach, Bach and Liszt worked there, and in 1919 the famous Bauhaus art school was founded in Weimar.
