Bad Radkersburg (Austria), Saturday 8 June 2013
Well, okay, you may not see many vultures at the Wüstenlauf ("Desert Run") in Austria but it will surely get pretty hot on the course, and there will be a "Wüstenfest" with belly dancers and camel riding for the kids.
The event offers three routes for runners (8.7km, 13.6km, and half marathon), a 9.5km nordic walking competition, and children's races.
All routes begin and end on the main square of the small town of Bad Radkersburg which is situated on the Austria-Slovenia border in a region that gets more sunshine than any other region in Austria.
Although the course is completely flat the race is a true test for everybody.
Start is at 4.30pm on a Saturday afternoon in early June when the sun is often blazing hot, and there's not much shade on the course.
Most of the route is on roads and cycleways through corn and pumpkin fields. A short section is on gravel. The course is AIMS-certified and traffic-free.
The registration fees include free entry to the thermal indoor and outdoor pools of the "Parktherme" spa in Bad Radkersburg.
