Bad Radkersburg (Austria), Saturday 2 June 2012
Starting and finishing on the main square of Bad Radkersburg, a spa town on the Austria-Slovenia border, the Parkthermen-Wüstenlauf ("Desert Run") comprises a number of running and nordic walking races as well as a "Wüstenfest" with belly dancers and camel-riding for the kids.
The event offers three routes for runners (8.7km, 13.6km and a 21.1km half marathon), children's races, and a 9.5km nordic walking competition.
Held in early June in a region which gets more sunshine than any other region in Austria, it can get pretty hot during the Wüstenlauf. The sun can be blazing hot at the start at 4.30pm, and there's not much shade on the course.
Most of the race is on cycleways and roads through corn and pumpkin fields. A short section is on a dirt trail. The course is flat, traffic-free and AIMS-certified.
The entry fees include free entry to the thermal indoor and outdoor pools of the Parktherme spa in Bad Radkersburg.
