The annual Maraton državnosti commemorates Slovenia's declaration of independence from Yugoslavia on 25 June 1991.

Held on a Friday evening in June, the event offers a 10.5km race (one lap) and a half marathon (two laps).

The start and finish are at the "Dvorana Zlatorog" handball arena on the northern edge of Celje, Slovenia's third largest town with a population of almost 40,000.

The route is an undulating out-and-back course through rolling countryside. The turning point is at the very pretty reservoir of Šmartinsko jezero (pictured).

In 2011, the half marathon winners were Tadej Kaluža of Slovenia (1:16:13) and Marija Vrajić of Croatia (1:26:22).
