"La Mezza di Aurisina" — 33rd "Karst Half Marathon" 2011
Aurisina (Italy), Sunday 2 October 2011
The Maratonina del Carso half marathon race takes place on the windswept Karst Plateau, which rises steeply from the Adriatic coast in the north-east of Italy.
The start and finish are in the village of Aurisina (Slovene: Nabrežina), situated near the border with Slovenia, about 15km from the city centre of the port of Trieste.
Aurisina is very close to the shore, but it sits at an elevation of 140 metres above sea level, and from the course it is not possible to see the Adriatic.
The race is held on an undulating out-and-back course. Unfortunately, the course is not closed to traffic. The first (and the last) 6.5km are run on a busy main road, and on your way back to Aurisina you can expect a fair bit of car traffic.
The finisher buffet and the pasta party, held after the race in a small park, are really nice, however.
In 2010, the half marathon had over 450 finishers. A large number of them came from Slovenia. The winners were Francesco Duca of Italy (1:09:07) and — after serving a two-year doping ban — Slovenia's Helena Javornik (1:20:47).
