19th "Turopolje Run" - Velika Gorica Half Marathon 2011
With just two weeks to go until race day, details on this year's Turopoljska trka - an important running event in the Croatian race calendar - have been finally released.
The event takes place in Velika Gorica, a largely modern town and home to the Zagreb Airport, situated about 16 kilometres to the south of Zagreb's city centre on the broad Turopolje plain.
The half marathon consists of three laps through town. The route is flat and fast, but unfortunately it's not particularly attractive. There's not much to see, and each lap includes an out-and-back section on the busy main road to the airport. The inside lanes are reserved for runners, the outside lanes for cars, so that traffic jams form on your right and on your left.
In 2010, the winners were Tamás Kovács of Hungary (1:08:33) and Kenyan-born Lucia Kemani of Bosnia and Herzegovina (1:14:23).
