15th Zirbitzkogel Mountain Run 2011
Sankt Anna am Lavantegg (Austria), Sunday 26 June 2011
This attractive uphill trail race in the Eastern Alps takes runners to the mountain hut on the 2396-metre-high Zirbitzkogel in Austria's province of Styria. The route is 10 kilometres long, the total elevation gain is approximately 1100 metres.
The start is in the village of Sankt Anna am Lavantegg, situated at about 1300 metres above sea level. Participants run mostly on good trails, at first through forest and then across vast mountain pastures. The final climb to the finish is the steepest part of the course.
After the race, participants walk back down to the "Waldheimhütte" mountain hut (at ca. 1600m). From there, a bus brings them to the pasta party and award ceremony in Sankt Anna.
Although the Zirbitzkogel-Berglauf is a relatively small event with around 100 finishers many top mountain runners have taken part in the race. In 2010, the winners were Issac Toroitich Kosgei of Kenya (58:02) and Margit Egelseder of Austria (1:16:47).
