18th Bükk Mountain Marathon
The Bükk National Park comprises a densely wooded karst plateau in the north-east of Hungary, not far from the border with Slovakia. It's named after the beech trees which are the predominant species in the area.
With more than 1000 caves and 20 peaks over 900 metres the Bükk Hills are a popular destination for hikers and cyclists. The highest peak is at an elevation of 959 metres.
The mountain marathon, held in early July, offers a 6.2k run, a 10k race, a half marathon (20.7k), a full marathon (42.3k), and for the first time also a 50k race.
Start and finish is in Majális park on the eastern slopes of the Bükk Hills, about 11 kilometres from the centre of Miskolc, Hungary's third largest city with a population of about 170,000. The lovely little resort of Lillafüred is just over 3 kilometres away.
The routes follow roads and trails up and down the hills.
In 2009, the marathon winners were Gábor Szabó (2:55:57) and Ildikó Wermescher (3:49:39).
