4. Mini Maraton Lanterna 2009
4th Mini Marathon Lanterna
Tourism is much more developed on the Istrian peninsula than athletics. Overall 111 runners competed in last year's event on Istria's west coast. More than half of them came from foreign countries.
The Maraton Klub Umag, founded in 2005, is working hard to promote the sport in this part of Croatia with lots of running, duathlon and triathlon events.
The Mini Marathon Lanterna offers races of 5km and 11km. Start and finish are in the village of Tar, which is on a plateau at an elevation of 116 metres above sea level, about 2.5km from the shore.
The race follows an out-and-back course through olive groves, vineyards and woods to the Lanterna peninsula. The first half of the race is downhill, the way back uphill. 5k runners turn around at the small fishing harbour Santa Marina, 11k runners carry on along the coast to the turning point at the Autocamp Lanterna.
The races coincide with the "Tourist Days" festival held in the villages of Tar and Vabriga over the weekend.
